“Altmetrics for Researchers: Practical, Honest, and Without Illusions”
The KPI Library invites researchers from Igor Sikorsky KPI and anyone interested to join the online lecture “Altmetrics for Researchers: Practical, Honest, and Without Illusions.”
Do likes, reposts, and mentions in blogs or news articles really say anything about the quality of scientific research? Altmetrics are often presented as an “alternative” to traditional citations, but what do they actually measure? And should researchers rely on these metrics?
In this online lecture, we will discuss:
- what altmetrics are and where they came from;
- what they actually measure (and what they cannot measure);
- whether there is a connection between altmetrics and scientific citations;
- why a viral article may be scientifically weak, or vice versa;
- how researchers can work with altmetrics tools without self-deception.
We will also examine real-world case studies on the use of social media data in science.
After this session, you will have a clear understanding of when altmetrics are useful and when they are misleading.
Speaker: Serhii Nazarovets, Ph.D. in Social Communications, Senior Researcher at the Library of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University.
Registration.
All registered participants will receive a link via email.
Participation in the webinar is free of charge. No certificate will be issued.
