Lecture “Frauds around scientific journals or How to protect your research”

Dear friends, we continue the topic of fighting against predatory journals! We invite KPI scientists and everyone to an open lecture “Frauds around scientific journals or How to protect your research”, which will be held in our Library, in the educational space CLUST Space, on October 28 at 16:00.

Why you should come:

  • to gain knowledge to recognize the dangers associated with unethical academic practices;
  • to protect your research results from being published in fraudulent journals

Key aspects:

  • Predatory journals. Practices for identifying journals that use fake metrics, promise quick publication, and aggressively attract authors. The danger of using outdated blacklists, such as Jeffrey Beale’s lists.
  • Stolen journals. The mechanism of hijacking scientific journals and its consequences for authors, who often do not realize that their articles are published in fake publications.
  • Journals that are no longer indexed in authoritative databases. Examples of journals that have been excluded from databases, such as Scopus and Web of Science, due to non-compliance with scientific standards.
  • Ghostwriting and paper mills. The phenomenon of data fabrication, creation of fake author profiles, and sale of ready-made articles. Pressure on scientists (“publish or perish”), which increases the popularity of unethical practices.
  • Gray zone journals. Journals that are not formally predatory, but have questionable editorial policies that can lead to low quality publications.
  • Tools for finding influential scientific journals. An overview of useful tools such as Think. Check. Submit., Scopus, Web of Science, which will help to check scientific journals and avoid publishing in fraudulent publications.

Speaker: Sergiy Nazarovets, PhD in Social Communications.
